The Food and Drug Administration has issued a health advisory for healthcare professionals and individuals utilizing Chantix® to quit smoking.

University Health Services is committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of all clients. As we continue to offer smoking cessation programs we will be following the recommendations of the FDA advisory. We ask that clients requesting Chantix® as a smoking cessation aid visit a primary care provider for screening and to obtain a prescription. Appointments for the screening may also be made here at University Health Services.

Various smoking cessation aids have been proven to help individuals become tobacco-free. Listed are a few of the products available through University Health Services and the Office of Health Promotion. A more comprehensive overview is provided during the program sessions.

Smoking Cessation Aids: Nicotine Replacement Therapy
Zyban® (prescription Bupropion/Wellbutrin)

Nicotine Replacement Therapy is a broad category that covers several products such as the nicotine patch, nicotine gum, lozenges, nasal spray or inhalers.

Nicotine Patch: the patch eases nicotine withdrawal symptoms by steadily releasing nicotine through the skin, into the system throughout the day.

Nicotine Gum: chewing nicotine gum readily releases nicotine into the system relieving the cravings produced by withdrawal. Some individuals find that the gum helps them deal with the behavioral habit (or act of smoking) as well.

Lozenges: the lozenge works along the same lines as the nicotine gum.

Nicotine Nasal Spray: the nicotine is delivered into the system through the lining of the nose.

Nicotine Inhaler: with the inhaler nicotine will enter the body more slowly than by smoking. The inhaler delivers nicotine into the mouth by puffing on the cartridges.

Zyban® (Bupropion®): this is a non-nicotine prescription pill that targets chemicals in the brain relating to the urge to smoke and to withdrawal symptoms.
